Music Music Music 3.5.11
I heard Alabama Mississippi by Jim Gill for the first time yesterday. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted my Saturday story time to be filled with music.
Saturday Storytime
attendance: 60
Miss Mouse was wearing her pink sweater, yellow dress and talked about how many people were here on this cold rainy/snowy Saturday!!
Miss Mouse: was hiding behind family portraits. She was behind the fish family.
I kind of zoned out and didn’t do a fingerplay here — which i normally do.
Book 1: Cat Secrets by Jef Czekaj. Fun book — we enjoyed meowing, purring, and most of all napping like kitties.
Song 1: Five Little Monkeys jumping on the Bed. I can’t find the version: they thought and thought and said, let’s hop, turn around, jump outside. It’s cute.
Book 2: I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont. It’s such fun and great with predicting the rhyme!
Song2: Alabama Mississippi by Jim Gill. I got the tambourines out. We shook them to Alabama, Mississippi. Mississippi, New Orleans. Alabama, Mississippi and then we shook them down to New Orleans. Fun. Fun. Fun. This is a new song in my bag and I really really REALLY like it.
Book 3: Fiddle-i-Fie by Will Hillenbrand. The group was too young and big to really have fun with this!
Finger Activity: Miss Cat and Mr. Dog Miss Cat and Mr. Dog invite each other to lunch going up and down hills and across the river. It involves like of hand movements including mouth noises for each action (hard to describe, sorry). When we finish I tell them, “congratulations, you just told a story.” It’s good.
Book: If You’re Happy and You know it by David Carter.
Titles I didn’t use but intended to:
- Book: How to you Wokka-wokka? by Elizabeth Bluemle I think this book needed a smaller older group to be effective.
- Storycards: Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton. We scanned the book and put the pages on story cards. This would have been an excellent addition to the day, but I think there were too many people. Maybe next time I have a Saturday storytime….
- Flannel:Boom Boom Aint it Great to Be Crazy. The Raffi song in pictures. I didn’t use it because at the last minute I discovered the elephant was not in the envelope. Drat not checking my materials more than 10 minutes before 60 people show up!
- Song:Old McDonald Had a Band by Raffi. Not enough instruments. This is best done with ab0ut 25 people, which is what we average on Saturdays…
In short I had good intentions to have a music music music storytime, I just didn’t think through the order of things.
