Mother’s Day Saturday Story Time

Saturday Storytime
attendance: 32 It was a very young story time — I would say the average ages for 2-1/2 years old.  Kinda young …. and it turns out the group participation ascpect of my plans sort of sunk to the ground….
Miss Mouse was wearing her cardigan sweater and boa. We talked about Mother’s Day
Miss Mouse: was hiding behind the blue flower
fingerplay: hickory dickory dock
Book 1: Over in the Meadow by Paul Galdone.  I’ve never done this book in story time and I think I picked the wrong Saturday to do it. This group was too young and they just didn’t feel the rhymes and pattern.  I love the pictures!
Song: I’m a Little Teapot by Wiggleworms
Book: Knock Knock, Who’s There? by Tad Hills  I like this book so much.  It’s funny yelling Knock knock….
Flannel Story:  Monkey Face by Frank Asch.  I know you aren’t surprised to hear that I did monkey face.  It’s truly one of my favorite stories to tell.  and…It was wonderful to see families who didn’t know the story experience it today.
Song 2: Put Your Finger on by Parachute Express
I had waffles for breakfast which inspired:
Flannel #2:Flip Flap Jack Wouldn’t that make a great breakfast for mom tomorrow?
Book 3: If You’re Happy and You Know it by David Carter I really wish Scholastic would reprint this…

Titles I didn’t use but intended to (Sometimes 30 minutes isn’t enough):

  • Book: Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
  • Song:  Mama Don’t Allow by Wiggleworms
  • Flannel: M-O-M-M-Y the group was too young to sing a song of letters…

Valentine’s Day 2013

Early Storytime
attendance: 18

Letter of the Day: L
Miss Mouse: was hiding behind hearts
What is hiding in the sock?  Lock
Book 1:  Mouse’s First Valentine by Lauren Thompson
Fingerplay: hickory Dickory dock
Prop:  Mother’s Chocolate Valentine by Jack Prelutsky. We saved a big chocolate heart box from a past valentine’s day bribe from a book salesman.  It’s great to watch the different reactions to this poem.  Some younger kids really react strongly to eating all the chocolates.  It’s not sharing.
Prop story:  Four Valentine’s in a Rainstorm by Felicia Bond.  Until this very moment, I didn’t know Felicia Bond wrote this book.  It was released a few years ago.
Song: Knuckles Knees by Jim Gill.  After doing this song for five weeks, there seemed to be real improvement.
Flannel Board: My Froggy Valentine
Word of the day:  livid.  There are lots of good L words, but they’re generally known: laughter, lavendar, lively.  Livid is a good angry word.

I’ve been doing story time long enough to remember we used to do filmstrips (though I never did)… this was an interactive version of a long held story time tradition
fingerplay: A-Ram Sam Sam A girl — maybe 8 0r 9 — came in today and told me she used to come to story time and do A-Ram Sam Sam and that she taught it to her younger sister. I thanked her for reminding me. It’s like riding a bike, once you A-Ram Sam Sam you don’t forget.

Prop: Imogene’s Antlers by David Small
song 2: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean by Jim Gill using our letter Bs … great fun! Even the adults played along.

Juicy word of the day: Brilliant. Also Imogene’s Antlers used the word Bravo, so I used that one too.
Craft: Bears like honey. who makes honey? Bees… we stretched a bit and made Bees

I really enjoyed this story time… everything came together rather nicely.  It was a small group, but there were enough supplies that the adults could participate.  Overall, a bodacious and brilliant time!

Gingerbread Story Time Extravaganza

The community where I work has a very active downtown association.  They hold a big, festive event the weekend after Thanksgiving.   And we’re involved in the kick-off.  We hold 2 simultaneous storytimes (one in the library’s meeting room and one in the children’s services program room).  Afterwards the crowd meets on the street (temporarily closed by the police) where Mrs. Claus rides a fire truck behind a marching band. They walk down Main Street for a block to the train station where Santa is welcomed and they light the tree.

Don’t you love it?  There is a small-town feel smack dab in the middle of suburbia.  The whole downtown is focusing on gingerbread this season. Continue reading

Tip: I actually worked in a literacy tip: Singing elongates vowel sounds: When you sing you’re really singing the vowels.  It helps children hear them.
