Happy Birthday Flannel Friday

Inspired by LQ and her wordle from last week… I wanted to know what my site looks like.

My post for 3.15.2013 is my first post in Flannel Friday.  Enjoy.

Q: What does Flannel Friday Mean to Me?

wffmtmrc smallA: Invisible Friends and Professional Development.

Let me explain.  In the summer of 2011, I was at the Iowa State Fair.  I had my phone out and I was checking my twitter feed.  Back then, Flannel Friday was mostly a community on Twitter.  It was a Friday and I wanted to check and see the different posts that were flying that week.  One of my friends said, “Oh, put your phone down and stop playing with your invisible friends.”  Little did he know. Will you be participating in next week’s special Flannel Friday round-up?

It’s in preparation of the second anniversary of Flannel Friday (3.15.13). We’ll accept flannel posts in addition to posts that reflect the importance of Flannel Friday to your professional and online life.

  • If you don’t have a blog and want to share What Flannel Friday Means to Me (e.g. you), we have bloggers who are willing to guest host you. Let me know and I can set you up with someone.
  • If you have a blog and will be participating and would like a little blog bling (though not the sparkly kind), refer to the code on the right side of this blog.

is this a graphic we like?

Do you want a copy of this graphic for your post on March 8th? I wasn’t planning on making this in to a banner…what ff means to me

Underwear Saturday Storytime

Saturday Storytime September 1, 2012
attendance: 35
Miss Mouse: was hiding behind Underwear…
Miss Mouse was wearing her pink chocolate dress and toting a magnifying glass. She wanted to tell everyone that Miss Mouse Mysteries have started. Find three clues and answer the question for a sticker!  Good times!
fingerplay: Clap, Clap, Your Lap.
Book 1: Bear in Underwear by Todd Doodler
Song:  Started what I thought was “Humpty Dumpty” by the Wiggleworms.  Oops, it was I’m a Little Teapot/2 Little Blackbirds.  Followed up by Humpty Dumpty.
Book 2:  Chicken Cheeks by Ian Michael Black.  Well, this is a fun book. Multi-syllabic synonyms for the business end of animals.  Perhaps my favorite: Duck-billed  platypus Gluteus Maximus.
fingerplay: Roll Roll Sugar Babies
Book 3:  The Underpants Zoo by Brian Sendelbach.  A fun look at the undies zoo animals might wear.
Song 2: Shake My Sillies out, the live version
Flannel: Dress the Pirate.  The dread pirate is in his underwear… let’s dress him!
Story cards: Underwear Do’s and Don’ts by Todd Parr.
Book 3:
If You’re Happy and You Know it by David Carter

Titles I didn’t use but intended to:

  • Book: Silly Sally by Audrey Wood (big book)
  • Book: Mrs. Wishy Washy (big Book)

The End of the Road

I’m at the end of my hosting contract and will not be renewing it.   If I feel inspired, I will renew my wordpress.com account.  But as of now, I want to channel my creative energy elsewhere.  Thanks for visiting.

Update 1.6.2012 : Maybe not…

Flannel Friday Roundup for 11.11.11

When I was in Prague last week, almost everyone on BBC was wearing poppies on their lapel. I discovered it was a fundraiser for the Royal British Legion… and since it’s Veteran’s Day, I thought I’d bring the Poppy to the Party… for one night only, a poppified Flannel Friday logo. ♥

Let the round-up begin:

Allison from Miss Allison is Blogging has a cute way to work on colors during November with White Feather, White Feather.

Andrea from rovingfiddlehead kidlit came up with a clever way to demonstrate the rain coming out the waterspout in a prop story version of The Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Anne from So Tomorrow is getting ready for winter and letting the good times roll with Snowball Friends.

Also working on colors: Carissa from happy stuff presents the power of the cape in Superhero Colors.

Cate from Storytiming adapted “Buzz, Said the Bee” which is a reader. I think readers make excellent flannel boards.

Erin from Falling Flannelboards (cute name) is presenting Patternpillars.

The buzz over at Katie’s Storytime Katie is that she sewed her Six Little Bumblebees.

Katie from Recipe for Reading presents a clever take on Three Little Kittens!!

Mary from Miss Mary Liberry is Making a Pig. This was an Inspired-by Flannel Friday post.

Meghan at Busy Crafting Mommy did a Circus program and has a flannel that goes with it, the Circus is in Town. Make sure you see the lion act, he goes through a “flaming hoop”.

Miss Mel from Mel’s Desk has an interesting idea using felted Building Blocks. {Creative play and storytime in one posting!}

Mollie from What Happens in Storytime is blowing candles out on Five Birthday Candles. This was an Inspired-by Flannel Friday post.

Moxie at Storytime with Moxie presents a new take on Humpty Dumpty.

Natasha from Natasha the Artsy Librarian was indeed artsy with her prop story Rhyming Dust Bunnies, and are they cute!

Katie Sarah at Story Time Secrets has turkeys on the brain with Five Little Turkeys. (Sorry about that Katie.)

Sarah from Read it Again asks “Have you Ever seen a Turkey?” with polka dots??

Tracey from 1234 More Storytimes shows us One Frog Jumps.

My name is Sharon and this is my blog. Baa-Choo by Sarah Weeks is posted on this blog.

Do you have a blog? Flannel Friday is a great career development tool.

Did I miss you? I hope not. If it’s still 11.11.11 where you are, leave me a comment and I’ll make sure you get added to the list.

Bark George

A commenter on this blog wanted to know what our Prop Story George looked like.  We bought him through a salesman several years ago.  From the tag he is called Freddie Fetch #2367 from the North American Bear Company in Chicago.  ©2004

And here we have a picture of George with a kitty cat coming out of his mouth:

and lastly, a side version George.

Halloween Story Time 10.25

The story times at our library are mostly open story times — where child and caregive share the experience together. There are registered infant, lapsit, and preschool storytimes, but generally we serve our patrons with open storytimes. There are days when we care barely get 8 in a open story — which doesn’t seem worth the effort — and then there is Halloween Story Time. About four years ago, about a hundred people showed up! Yikes! Our program room can hold about 75 at the most, after that it doesn’t really work. Since then, we make a big deal about Halloween storytime and put it in the library’s meeting room. Two of us present a story time like this… planning and taking turns and present prop stories.  No costumes, please.

attendance: 90 adults and children of all ages from infants to toddlers, 3s, 4s and very few 5s
Miss Mouse dressed up as a pirate for Halloween.  She told a joke: What is a pirate’s favorite letter?  Arrrr.
fingerplay: Clap. Clap your lap.
Book 1: Snappy Little Halloween
Prop Story: Chocolate Chip Ghost.  We don’t seem to have this book, I think it’s an older tale though.  four or five ghosts who only eat white food get bored and disobey their mommy ghost, to disastrous results.  The story is told, with five ghosts on a stick…
Fingerplay: Itsy Bitsy Spider
Prop: I Want My Mummy. This in-house story is a complete rip off of Martin Waddell’s story Owl Babies.  Three mummies wait for the mummy mommy to come back. I want my mummy cries the youngest.
Flannel: Make a Jack-o-Lantern.  Similar to make a Pig, but putting the pieces together to make a Jack-o-Lantern.  Fun.
Story Cards: Boo! Boo Who?  In-house production… different shaped animals are dressed up as ghosts, can you tell who is who?
flannel: Dragon’s Halloween by Dav Pilkey in which Dragon makes the scariest Jack-o-Lantern out of some itty bitty pumpkins.
Books: Brooms are for Flying by Michael Rex.
Song: Spider on the Floor. Raffi’s version is my favorite .  We pass out spiders attached to yarn.

Happy Birthday
